Eugene Sawyer (1934-2008) served as Acting Mayor of Chicago from December 2, 1987 to April 24, 1989. He became active in local government in 1968, serving as 6th Ward Committeeman until his election as 6th Ward Alderman in 1971. After Mayor Harold Washington’s death on November 25, 1987, the Chicago City Council elected Sawyer to serve as Acting Mayor. Though Sawyer ran for a full term as mayor in 1989, he was defeated by Richard M. Daley.
